For those of you who don't follow [profile] ursulav's stuff ... Enlightenment.

My moment involved Anne McCaffrey and firebreathing green dragons somewhere around age nine but otherwise it was exactly the same, right down to the expression.

I'm trying to think of an equivalent male author, and coming up empty?

That said, this is easily the best link of the day. :-)

Heinlein maybe? I didn't really read much of his "adult" work, just his "young adult" stuff like Starbeast.

Heinlein gets communal marriages all over the place, but (that I remember) there was one instance of men kissing with a reference to primitive Christianity... and that's it.

My bet is that most male SF/Fantasy writers... straight. Most female SF/Fantasy writers... bi. But that's only a guess.

I seem to recall that it was either in "Number of the Beast" or "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" when Heinlein made a reference to a male character being 98% heterosexual, but always trying to push that 2% as far as he could. When I read that as a teenager, that definitely stood out to me. (Ack, it also might have been "Time Enough For Love"... after a while, Heinlein's books all start to mix together...) That's my entire recollection of male homosexuality in Heinlein books, but if we're talking female? Lesbianism/bisexuality is at least implied in a number of books... Heinlein was certainly the proverbial "dirty old man" in a lot of his later works.

Other than Heinlein, I'm hard pressed to think of a male author who has had homosexual characters in a book that was published previous to the last 5-10 years. I have seen it start showing up in a lot of more recent books, though.

I want to say that there's someone in the Elric novels, but it's been too long.

I've never read that bit, or don't recall it, which most likely makes it Number of the Beast.

I was thinking male sexuality in Heinlein books. Women are free to get it on, but most often, it's multiple women with one guy.
