Monday - Played sand volleyball and managed to ram my foot into the boards that make up the court perimeter. Swore loudly, got my ass back onto the court and played the rest of the night. Went out for dinner and drinks with my team* afterwords. Decided that splitting a pitcher of sangria with Pam as a Bad Idea(tm) for driving home, so we all went back to the sand courts, lit up the courts with Tim's car** and played some more. Got home around midnight, took a bath and fell over.

Tuesday - During the night, my middle toe on my right foot swelled up to massive proportions and turned purple black, including the nail. The foot was amazingly sore. I waited until the end of the day and then went to the emergency room. Emergency room doc said "eh, ain't that pretty. It might be broken, come back tomorrow and we'll X-Ray it".

Wednesday - Get it x-rayed***. Not broken. I asked the doctor, hypothetically, whether I could play on it or not. Doctor saw through my ploy and gave me the "you have to let it heal" lecture. He then showed me how to tape it up and told me to make sure I didn't play barefoot for awhile. Wednesday night, back in the sand subbing Chris with OctoPi2. I played back and sucked but at least we didn't get points dinged for missing a player.

Fast forward to Saturday. Grass doubles tournament. Six hours of fun. I was good, I taped up and wore shoes. We didn't win but it was gorgeous day and it was good and I'm glad we played.

Today - God DAMN, my toe hurts. Its healing, its back to normal size and the bruising has seeped up into the foot proper so I now have a whole half of a foot black & blue. Okay, I give, no more volleyball for awhile.

I ended up spending ALL of today cleaning the house and grocery shopping. Its been almost a month since we did a serious cleaning job or shopping trip. It was bad enough that even the Boy was having issues with it. So I broke out the bleach and dug in and spent the entire day setting the house back to rights. *sigh* My mother would be so proud. Everything has been disinfected, including the cats.

Now I'm sitting here, catching up on lj, drinking Red Rack Ale and listening to the new Tori CD. Soon I'll put some ice on my abused limb, watch Pan's Labyrinth and call it an excellent weekend.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
* - my indoor sixes team broke up into two sand fours teams. My half plays Mondays and the other half plays Wednesdays, with the Boy and Tim being the two that play both nights. Both leagues are run by BVA and, just to make matters confusing, we decided to keep our indoor team name. That's right, there are now TWO teams named "Face Biting Octopus" playing in the same organization.

On another note, we managed to get one of our opponents to fall over laughing at our battle cry last week. I guess "OCTO ... PI!" done as a call and answer doesn't really turn people's blood into ice water but its effective as a distraction technique. You try passing a ball when you're on your knees and crying.

** - Tim has a bit too much money or not enough expensive hobbies. Tim also has a Car. Tim's Car is smarter than I am at navigating Boston. Tim makes really weird faces and noises when you drive a volleyball at his Car.

*** - Everyone should get a middle toe x-rayed once. It involves a LOT of tape to hold the other toes out of the way. I should try selling the pictures... I bet there is an S & M Foot fetishist out there somewhere.

Happy healing and I hope it goes as quickly as possible. (I remember the mottled-foot stage so fondly.)

Sorry to hear you hurt your foot! Hope it heals up soon.

How do you like the new Tori album? I haven't bought it yet, because I was afraid it would sound like Strange Little Girls.

Nah, its more like Bee Keeper ... mixed but listenable. Strange Little Girls was near useless. Scarlet's Walk was pretty close to "classic" Tori and this one is somewhere in the middle. A couple really good songs, a couple "what the hell were you smoking" songs and a lot of "eh" songs. Her web page has a couple playing if you want a sample. I'm sure more of it will grow on me with additional listenings. It took me a good long time to like more than just two songs on Bee Keeper.

Get yourself to a drug store or well-supplied grocery store and buy some arnica ointment or gel. Trust the girl who sports new, impressive bruises from brutal hobby every week, arnica works. It'll halve your healing time 9for the bruises anyway) and it'll also work with the pain and stiffniess. it also comes in little tablets; both together work very well.
