So Tira needs surgery, according to the exotics specialist at Tufts. If we keep draining it, its just going to put extra strain on the kidney such that it will need to be removed anyways, probably within a year, and all we'll have done is wasted money. He seems hopeful and says this is a very common procedure with cats, though he's never heard of it being done on a ferret. He and the vet student helping him kept doing things like staring at her x-rays, coming over and feeling the swelling, going back to the x-rays and going "this is so cool, have you ever seen anything like this? Neither have I. Amazing". And I'm thinking the whole time "it would be more amazing on someone else's ferret". But at least they are willing to try to fix her. Unfortunately, the surgery is going to run roughly the same amount as it would cost to fix the Little Red Wagon's transmission. Sorry, Wagon, you'll just have to wait and make due.

Speaking of the Wagon, she seems to be running fairly well. I drove her around locally today and the transmission didn't make any extra noise or scary down shifting. I went through my paperwork on her, which includes all the work and reciepts for the last 4 years, and I couldn't find where I had had the transmission fluid last. Its possible that she's been going 4 years without a change. I have a theory that sitting around for a month caused all the metal filings to sink to the bottom of the tank and then when I started running her, they all got sucked up at once. I'm going to check this by getting out my reference books and finding out where the out hose on the tank is. If its at the bottom, like I think, then that might explain it. Either way, I'm working on the "run her till she dies, then decide what to do" method now.

Didn't pick up Boy's motorcycle yesterday like we were planning. S let Boy park it in his basement for the winter and Boy's been dicking around on getting it registered and insured, so we couldn't actually try to get it till this weekend. Man, I want to go VOOooooom-ing again. In leather. From head to toe. *sigh* We were going to get it yesterday but we spent too long at the vets. My appointment was at 3 and the vet didn't see us till 5:20. The reason? He's the only exotics vet there and they had a pet kangaroo from concord come in with a broken front leg. So we spent lots of time waiting around but hey, how often do you get to see a live kangaroo with a cast on? All in all, a good weekend.
