they FUCK you at the drive through
Apr. 2nd, 2004 08:51 pmMy life just made an abrupt about face. A month ago we were house hunting, planning to spend at least another 5 years here, both our jobs were secure and our lives fairly stable. No more.
Today Sun announced that they were laying off 3300 employies AND scrapping the Boy's project. This is a 6 year, billion dollar piece of work and they just threw it out the window. The Boy's group...gone. Some of them will have the privilege of applying for new jobs at Sun. Most of them are just fucked. The Boy is of the opinion that even if he is amoung the "lucky", he really doesn't want to stay there anyways and I can't blame him. He's been working like a mad man for the last 6 months, putting 12 hour days and burning himself out, all for what? For them to throw all that hard work out right as its ready to go into production. Fucking rat bastards.
So now we get to decide what we want to do. Stay here and try to find a new job for the Boy or head to points less populated. While I like my job, I'm more than willing to get the hell out of Boston. I'm tired of not being able to afford a house that is worth having and spending so much of my pay check on basic necessities. I make good money but you wouldn't be able to tell it by looking at where I am in life. I'm tired of this city and how it seems to be draining me dry.
So anyways, anyone out there know of a decent electrical engineering type job opening that could use an amazingly bright and hard working individual, let me or the Boy know. If its near somewhere where I can do autonomous systems research, all the better. San Fran, Houston and DC need not apply.

Date: 2004-04-02 06:52 pm (UTC)You may want to talk to your employers - you may be able to pull off the same kind of deal I'm getting; when kasra_c and I move out of CA to points Eastern, I get to keep my current job and telecommute (with periodic trips back to the Sunnyvale office). They may say no, but if they do, you'll be no worse off then if you have to leave them anyways.

Date: 2004-04-02 07:16 pm (UTC)Regardless, best of luck. Gotta hate inane big-bureaucracy decisions like that, kinda takes whatever motivation to work you might have had and throws it out the window.

Date: 2004-04-03 09:33 am (UTC)When we leave CA, one place we'll look will be Denver and Colorado Springs. I saw something about CO being 3rd for tech after MA and CA (there was a link to the study results posted on /. this week). My family is there which is a big impetus for us possibly going there. I hear there are lots of military-related jobs that would love to have someone like you, Jo, and while I couldn't speak for Josh's luck, it wouldn't hurt to look.
Housing wise, we can definitely afford there, too, even on one income. I can get a decent house for $160K-$200K in the Springs!
Anyway, just my $.02. Too bad about Sun, btw...I've had a sinking feeling that they would pull something like this.

Date: 2004-04-03 12:51 pm (UTC)If I went to DC or Houston, I could actually continue working at Draper. We have offices in both places. DC just doesn't seem to be that different from Boston, though. It has all the people/traffic/expense of living problems that we do AND you don't get smack by Nor'easters. What's the use of that?

(I don't have much more useful than that, everyone said it already.)
(Except that I think Todd left out that CO is nice horse-country too.)

Date: 2004-04-05 02:03 pm (UTC)If the idea of moving to Colorado does interest you two I can check around with a few people and see what types of opportunities exest around here. Most of the people I know in the EE area are memory guys, but I could expand the search somewhat.
As a note, the EE field in Colorado may land people in Colorado Springs (where I live), Denver, or even Fort Collins. They are all on a 100-120 mile stretch of I-25 along the front range. If you want more info on the area I've lived here a very long time.
