Last night I got to refresh my skills at being a vet tech. I got up to the farm to clip Tequila and Kim was there holding Sage waiting for the vet to show up. He had somehow managed to put is front right leg through a board and then pulled back. He had huge gashes on either side of his leg right at the top. You could literally see the bone in the front one. It is the worst injury I've seen in a very long time.

Dr. McGee got there and drugged Sage and then spent 20 minutes or so pulling splinters of wood out of the wounds and cleaning it. He ended up putting 28 stitches in the two gashes total. I have a pretty hard stomach but watching him put his hand up under the skin like that completely turned my stomach. I didn't embarrass myself but I also wasn't able to eat dinner when I got home. I spent most of my time holding bandages and opening/closing bags and bottles so McGee didn't get blood everywhere. Kim kept her head together and continued to ask questions about care and such, even when she was turning blue and green from watching the doctor work.

So now Sage is on stall rest and not permitted to lay down. He's going to go insane out of boardom pretty quickly. He's out of commission as far as doing anything but light hand walking for at least the rest of the summer. Dr. McGee said that if they got all of the splinters out and can keep it from getting infected, then he should heal with only scars to show for it. Otherwise he may be lame for the rest of his life. Keep your fingers crossed. I'm going to try to put together a fund at the barn to help Kim with the bill. Last night cost her over $500 and that's just the start.

Its definitely time to move Tisa though. Carol has left the fencing at that place become so run down and and unsafe, every day another horse ends up gashed on it. I can't afford 500+ dollars in vet bills just because she'd rather buy another horse instead of fixing her fence line. Tisa already has a big gash on her neck because the gate is broken and Carol won't fix it. I also walked the line last night and ended picking up half a dozen bent nails from the inside of the line. After this show, I'm giving her my 30 day notice and getting Tisa the hell out of there.

Since he was there anyways, I had Dr. McGee give Tequila a low level tranqualizer. He told me "now don't wait around to do the tough parts, that's going to wear off real soon" and he was right. I was done with the ears and feet in about 10 minutes and around 15 minutes Tequila came out of it enough to start objecting. Still, definitely worth the $25 bucks just to not have it be another 4 hour fight.

The benny is being obstinate. You put the food in his mouth, he spits it out. Repeat 100 times. I'm lucking to get him to swallow 5 or 6 brine shrimp at any attempt. The bad thing is, on the feedings when he actually eats some, the next feeding he has a lot more energy and actively fights you about eating. He runs away, he flares up, he buries his head in the sand. The fellow's stomach is sunken in to his ribs and yet he spends energy fighting food even through it makes him feel better. The Boy thought maybe our brineshrimp got freezer burned and that's why he doesn't want them. I'm going to pick up some more tonight and see if he likes them better.
