oh, those urges
Jun. 28th, 2002 11:48 amNo, not those types of urges... These are more insane urges.
Fall - (insert gleaming eyes) must canning things.
I used to hate canning when I lived at home and my mother made me help. Now I do it on my own with no one forcing me and I like it, despite the work and mess and heat. I made apple pie filling, pizza sauce and pumpkin goo (stuff for all manner of pumpkin based food) last year. This year I'm already planning more pizza sauce, some spagetti sauce, maybe some jelly of some sort. Boy helped last year, mainly because he really likes the apple pie filling and not all of it made it into the jars.
Winter - (insert gleaming eyes) must make things.
I spend as much time as I can holed up in my art/sewing corner creating things. Clothes, art, candles, you name it, I'm making a mess trying to do it. The only time I work on my crazy quilt is during the cold months of the year, though I'm trying to force myself to embroider it this summer. I also noticed that my art production really falls off during any other season. I rarely even sketch during the summer.
Spring and Summer- (insert gleaming eyes) must grow things. Boy gets pretty fed up with it, even though he likes eating what I grow. In the spring I drag him around to every greenhouse and hardware store, frantically looking for just the right pots or just the right kind of strawberry. This year I decided I was only growing tomatoes, strawberries and lettuce. Okay, tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce and some spinach. Okay, 3 kinds of tomatoes, strawberries, 4 kinds of lettuce, spinach, snow peas, and a variety of peppers and thats it. No, really. ARGH! My whole back walkway is covered in pots and I installed a hanging basket on the fencing for some of the small tomatoe plants and the snow peas.
On the up side, it makes me happy. I like watching things grow and getting dirt everywhere. I have blossoms all over my snow peas right now and they are very pretty and are attracting lots of bees. They also aren't cooperating with the whole "hanging' part of the basket idea but that's okay. My tomatoes have small tomatoes on them and even the little plants that I grew completely from seed have blossoms on them. My peppers are just now starting to take off and the strawberries have 2 - 5 berries ready to eat each day. Now if I can just get my neighbor to water things while I'm away over the fourth.
