My efforts at growing a garden are being twarted by the lack of time and the abundance of water. Combined, they caused my brocoli to shoot up and bloom before I got it harvested. If you didn't know, the part of the brocoli that you eat is actually flower buds. The flowers are pretty and yellow-white and not at all appreciated after the hours I spent clearing land enough to grow brocoli on. The Boy went out last night and salvaged what he could. Here's hoping the second shots fair a bit better.
The other hurdles in my garden are slugs. Yes, my hurdles are 1/8 of an inch high and slimy and yet still they defeat me. I broke down and put out a shallow plate of beer last night. It seems like such a cruel thing to do but nothing else seems to be stopping them. They've destroyed my zuchini plants and a good section of my tomatoes. I didn't think ANYTHING ate tomatoe vines, being poisonous and all, but these guys are doing it. This morning, I had many bloated little slug corpses waiting for me. I'll probably have nightmare about zombie slugs tonight. Zombie slugs who leave stale, flat beer in their wake instead of slime trails.
*sigh*
At least the herb garden is doing well and my roses are blooming.

Date: 2005-06-30 03:14 pm (UTC)I hope Leslie and I get to making a garden next year. And maybe doing some kind of mulch thing around the fences so I can mow and not have to deal with the unreachable tall grasses (even the weedwacker is useless since it also eats the chicken wire).
My dad, of course, just says he doesn't know why people bother, citing the amount of time and money involved vs. the cheap convenience of buying fresh produce in the supermarket. Ahh, but nothing tastes as good as stuff you've grown yourself, right?
