These things just sneak up on you

One moment, it was all "we'll just get some cleaner and scrub the deck down and make it look nice". The next thing I knew, the Boy had a $200+ dollar belt sander in his hands and was stripping off all the old finish. Now we're eye balls deep in refinishing the deck with no end in sight. How do these big remodeling projects sneak up on us like this? One moment, I'm scrubbing a mark off the wall, the next we're replastering and repainting. I don't get it. You'd think something that big would make some noise or something.

Bleah...and Leslie has mentioned that we need to refinish our deck. And I already know we need to repaint. I think we'll just repaint the window trim next year, but not the whole house.
