Cable companies are satan's representatives on earth, along with long distance companies. I dislike having to have cable installed in my house just so I can read email. You shouldn't have to sell your soul so cheaply.
Waiting for the cable person to arrive: two 4-12 hours of your life. Having the cable person say, "Huh, I've never seen that before...": $125 and two 4-12 hours of your life. Seven calls to technical "help" before they notice they haven't rebooted the modem: two 4-12 hours of your life.
Watching youtube videos download in near-real time: Priceless "President's Day Special: One immortal soul!"
Some things exist in the "real" world. For everything else, there's the internet.
I really don't like Comcast, as a company. That said, my internet through them has been fast and solid (though pricey), and installation was not a problem (either here or back in Pittsburgh).
The only other choice out here is Qwest DSL or one of their resellers, which is not much cheaper, offers a quarter of the bandwidth, and Qwest is just as nasty of a telecom company, if not worse.
I was kinda hoping that Verizon's new fiber line program was available out here because it is fast AND cheap, but it appears that Qwest has the pacific northwest monopolized.
I have never seen a "nice" telecom company. I suppose EarthLink and Telerama aren't bad, but they are resellers, not providers.
