Hey, Neal, is this a hoax or is my domain behind on its registration?

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are Beijing Erimut Network Information Technology Co., Ltd in China, which is the domain name registration centre here. A formal application from the company called ChengGuang Investment (China) Co.,Ltd is to register " joflasher" as their domain name and internet keyword on Mar 20th 2008. Since this involves your company name or trade mark, in no time do we inform you of this. Please contact us timely if a first registration is needed to protect the domain names and internet keywords.

Kind Regards
Erix.Wen

Hi Jo

My best guess is that this is a fake. Notice it says "joflasher" rather than "joflasher.com". It sounds like they probably found your contact details from the public whois record for your domain. They will basically be looking for you to re-register with them rather than your current registrar and to probably buy the other domain name endings as well, at an inflated price. My advice would be to leave well alone. :)

Best wishes.

Steven

Thank you, Steve. I figured it was a hoax but the phone numbers had me worried that it was valid.

It's also why I offer to keep all whois records in my name for people free 'privacy'.

Of course it means that I have to deal with all the spam. (I'm up to about 13,000 spam a month).

Yuck! Are you sure you don't want some sort of compensation for hosting me? I mean, server space is one thing but that much spam? Insane!

Isn't your domain in your name? How else would you get that phishing attack in the first place? Either way, it's not too bad. Gmail only gives me a handful of false negatives a day.

I know at least some hosting companies offer to list themselves in whois, and forward any pertinent information on to you. Most offer the service for free, but some charge for it.
