I handed in an application to MIT today to take a grad course in operations research*. I am both proud to have finally taken that step and horribly nervous that they will reject me.

I am also vaguely guilty. If I'm taking more grad classes, shouldn't they be at CMU? Old (imaginary) grudges die hard, I guess.

* OR is describing the active world in terms of math. It is elegant and lovely. It is also bat shit on occasion but that's math for you.

Good luck! I hope you get accepted.

That sounds fantastically fun! OR has incredible overlap with my work and one of these days I really need to sit down and take a real OR class too.

Let us know how it goes, eh? Also, which course is it? Does it fall under the MIT open courseware umbrella?

That's why I decided to take this course. I can READ other people's OR work and code it up. I just can't take a general process description and come up with my own model.

6.255J - Optimization methods. I don't know if it completely open but last year's prof has the notes and the assignments up on his web page.

My cousin went to MIT...he majored in Inorganic Chemistry. My mother, when he told us what his major was said "INorganic Chemistry?! David, we don't even know what Organic Chemistry is, nevermind INorganic Chemistry!" Still, he's Professor Dave now. ;P Good luck on your application!

I hope its fun. will love to hear more.

How is it that you and i do such similar work? If you ever want a job in Seattle let me know - APL could use a girl like you.

Good question. Weird, isn't it? Appreciate the offer. If I ever pry myself out of New England, I might take you up on it.

My advisor insisted I take OR classes in grad school to beef up my mathematical modeling skills. Cool stuff. Hence, my life long goal of acquiring a Mathematica license. (Yes, I know OR is more than mathematical modeling. Those just happened to be the classes I took.)

Hope you have fun with it.

If you took full time grad work at MIT, that would invoke that old grudge.

Taking part time classes at a university hundreds of miles closer to home? Grudges there seem silly. :)

Re bat shit: I vaguely recall you holding a bonfire for your wavelet theory books.... :)

Anyways, I'm sure they'll accept you, and I hope you enjoy it!

AND made a voodoo doll of the prof, stuffed it with my notes and threw the fucker on the fire when we were done. Wavelet theory is neither lovely nor elegant. It's just bat shit and was THE last grad math class I took at CMU. They don't even OFFER that class anymore, it was so broken.
