So our saltwater tank has finished cycling. This means that the chemicals have all sorted themselves out and the water isn't death to any fish who dare swim in it. So what do I do but go buy another 10 lbs of live rock for in the tank.

10lbs, all one piece. One big rock. With a clam on it. Not a little cutesy clam either. This guy is big enough to eat. He's big enough to do some eating. Our damsels would both fit in him at once. He's bigger than some of the cherry stone clams you get at the grocery store. When the fish store worker pulled the rock out of the tank, I saw him clinging to the back and pointed him out. They basically poked at him a bit and said "well, he's big, he's ugly and no one is going to pay us for him. If you don't want him, we'll just cut him off the rock and throw him away".

Of course, I'm thrilled with my big ugly clam. I spent an hour setting up the rock in just the right place so he was visible but not out in the open. Apparently if they don't feel secure they pick up tent and move to another location. He was open some last night and spitting water around. There was also a little clam about the size of my finger nail on the rock next to him but I couldn't find him this morning. I guess he decided he would rather choose his own location.

Now that our water has settled down to being water and not a toxic vat, a bunch of the critters on our old liverock have started coming out again. Our big maroon feather duster was out most of last night and I was sure he was dead. I hadn't seen him come out of his tube in almost 2 weeks. I also found a little crab while I was rearranging the tank. I picked up one of the rocks and brought it to the surface of the water and saw his feet scurring back into a hole.

I learned that I have to wait a long time before I can get the fish I want. That fish only eats the worms and little critters that live in the sand and I don't have any yet. The fish store told me to come back this weekend and they would set me up with a starter set of sand critters to seed my tank with but there wouldn't be a substainable population for at least half a year. I think I'll mope now.
