comedy of errors
Jul. 30th, 2003 09:23 amSo I had the vet come out to the farm yesterday to give Tisa a checkup and pregnacy test. I got to the farm about 45 minutes before the vet did and figured I'd work Tisa a bit so she'd be tired out and not give the vet any problems. I didn't feel like riding, so I decided to just lunge her in the round pen. No problem ... except the horse that can't run and turn at the same time decided that TODAY she could run, turn and buck at the same time. It wasn't pretty. She ended up flat on her side with her legs tangled out between the bars of the round pen. Luckily, she was pretty stunned and I got her untangled before she tried to get up. When she did get back on her feet, she was limping badly. Luckily, the vet was already on his way.
Vet gets there, I tell him what happened. He checks her over good, says she has just badly bruised her shoulder, nothing dislocated, nothing broken and I'm to call him next week if she's still sore on it. Of course, he can't give her a clean bill of health since she's dead lame but that's okay. He then preceeded to poke and prod her, twist her feet, shine lights in interesting places, pull her ears, the whole nine yards. Said her teeth needed some work but other than that and the bum shoulder, she was fine. He was willing to do the teeth work while he was there, which was kind'a fun to watch. Think drugged, swaying horse and a giant wood rasp.
Oh, and she's about 5 months pregnant. Nothing to be done for it now. I was hoping she was just getting pot bellied from worms or bad hay or something. Guess we'll have an early winter baby.
Don't know if we'll be doing the big show here in 2 weeks or not. Have to see how long it takes this shoulder injury to heal.

Date: 2003-07-31 06:36 am (UTC)The reason for this is that I don't have the time or the money for a baby horse. They need daily supervision and can rack up thousands of dollars in vet bills by just being silly. Case in point, the current foal at the barn ended up needing to get her stomach pumped after she broke out of her pasture, got into the house and chewed through a bottle of floor cleaner. They are just too much work for me right now.
