We got our written acceptance. The Boy set up a housing inspector for Thursday afternoon. We (hopefully) close on the 28th of June, which means we don't have to move twice. This is a good thing, since moving the salt water aquarium even once is going to be a nightmare. All that's left is inspection, any renegotians if something doesn't pass, and getting the morgage which we are pre-approved for.

The house is 30 year old gambrel colonial ... basically a box with a barn roof and no real attic. It has a fireplace in the living room and a mixture of hardwood, tile and carpetting on the floors. The master bedroom is HUGE and has a walk in closet bigger than some bathrooms. The upstairs bedrooms have those weird, poky out windows. It also has an oversized 1 car garage for the Boy to make into a wood shop. The garage has a partial second floor as storage space. The basement is fairly large and apparently will get wet if it rains long enough.

The best thing about it, as far as I'm concerned is that its sitting on 1.38 acres of mostly useable land. The front and back yards are big and lovely. To the left of the house are wetlands, part of which belongs to the property. They aren't really active swamp...even with the rains, I didn't see any standing water, but the ground is definitely spongey and everything is overly green.

Most of the land extends out behind the house and is scrub land. Apparently it used to be yard but the old owners got tired of mowing all of it. They planted a row of pine trees showing where the back yard ends and left everything behind it grow up. That was about 20 years ago, so its fairly grown now. There are two fruit trees, an apple and a peach (I think), and a lilac bush in the yard proper. Out in the scrub land, I saw raspberry bushes blooming. I plan to go walk the scrub land when we do the inspection and find out what's all back there besides a plethora of birds. Hopefully I can clear a small portion of the scrub land for my garden. I don't want to touch the yard. The Boy keeps talking about putting a sand court in but we're short on players.

We initial passed over the house in the listings because the picture made it look pretty shitty. I wanted to see it soley for the land. We were pleasantly surprised when we got their and saw that the house actually looks 100% better than the pictures. Normally the opposite is true.

Now if nothing goes wrong....

So uhh, how much did this run for, and how far out of Boston is it? I'm kinda curious as to what makes Boston suddenly affordable again for you, though honestly it was hard to believe that between the both of you, you couldn't afford something. Even in the Bay Area, if you were both out here working, you could afford a decent house (only in terms of the Bay Area), so it's hard to imagine that this wouldn't hold true elsewhere..

Its about 25 miles outside of my work, which means I'm going to have a fairly unpleasant commute. We're paying $391,000 for it. The reason this one is affordable to us is a) Josh got a raise with the new job so we upped our limit b) its 30 years old and probably has lead paint, c) its sitting beside a swamp...a nice swamp but still a swamp.

I never said we couldn't afford something. I said nothing we could afford was less than 100 years old or safe. The definition of a decent house in boston is far far far below what most towns would even allow to still be standing, let alone have people living in them. Asbestos, lead paint, lead PIPES, holes in the walls, all of these we've seen for more than $350,000. It still holds true but we upped our limit. Lately we've been looking at houses besides swamps, houses with acreage but is on a verticle bank, houses sitting beside major highways, stuff like that. Most of them have been fairly safe though.

Lets just say there isn't going to be very many new books in our future...or trips ... or much of anything besides morgage and taxes. Yay, living on a budget.

Cool. Well, if you're free, we're playing tomorrow from 5:30 til it gets dark; assuming the courts are dry. It's at the back of the Renaissance Hotel in Bedford (between MITRE and the hotel).

Not sure who all will be there, but probably some people from the gym we played at in Burlington last year. (2 years ago ?)

oh, and by "affordable", you do of course realize that we're getting a morgage for about 95% of it, right? Which is not really affordable by any sane person's estimations. There's a reason PMI starts at 20%.

Ooh, I'm jealous. I *really* want a fruit tree in whatever house I end up at later in life.

Er, in the yard. Probably not in the house.

nonsense...put it in the house with a few sky lights. The boys can climb in it, you can gather the fruit, all without every needing to leave the comfort of home

*notices how you dodged my questions!* =P

I am working at Roger B Sturgis, a landscaping company in Waltham. It's a small company of maybe 30 pl but I do enjoy working there even if I have days where I come home crying (like today).

No, we havnt found a place yet but we got an approval on the pre-approval paperwork so we are going to start looking more diligently now that we know what we can have. =)

sorry about that
yes, Josh has a new job. He's going to work for AMT out in Boxboro with a large portion of his old group from Sun. The job doesn't start until the 18th of July, though, so he's in extended vacation mode right now.

I'm glad you are at a place you enjoy working at...I come home crying on occasion too but its normally because I'm not allowed to maim my co-workers when they need it.

Yay house! I hope it passes inspection all right. And that the not-quite-swamp doesn't give you too many bug problems, should you move in.
