now that Midori has figured out how to unlatch the cage doors.

We came home last night to the top door wide open and the beasties out and about. At first, we figured one of us must have forgotten to lock the top door. So we locked them in tight and double checked the doors before bed. They were out again this morning. I'm pretty sure its Midori since I saw her very carefully biting the one spot on the latch that will open things from the inside. Clever rat.

Unfortunately, my art room door was also open. No paints seem to have been eaten but my pin cushion was found under the dresser in our bedroom with the pins scattered to the four winds. I also blame Midori for that one. If given the chance, she will very diligently and carefully remove each and ever pin from a pin cushion.

If you're visiting, please keep your shoes on for your own safety.

Oooooh noooo... :-D
It's kindof like Cade learning to crawl. Only smaller, and with more destructive talent. (Cade isn't crawling yet, but he's been carpet swimming across the living room for the past several days, making beelines for the cords of Todd's laptop and the playstation controllers...)

Do they make any non-toxic stuff that tastes bad to keep your rats from chewing on things? I know we found out about some sour-apple flavored stuff that could keep Lhaso Apsos from chewing on thier ears. Maybe it could keep Midori from playing with the latch.

Also, a largish weight might work.

so the sour-apple stuff is called Bitter Apples. We tried it on them after Tira's surgery when they were fighting. They like it.

The door opens outwards and is ~waiste high. A large weight probably won't due to this. I'm thinking I should get a couple dog snaps and lock the cage with them.

Forget the dog snaps and just get an attack dog. Fear is the only thing that will keep them in that cage.

Except they don't know to fear dogs. Our friend Taylor sometimes brings his Bernese Mountain dog over for D&D. BIG dog. Ferrets act like they're going to rip him apart. They just don't understand.
